    "Those who can, do.

    Those who can't, teach.

    Those who can't teach

    1  Whew. Yup.

2   I finished around seven hours of grading papers tonight. Was pretty done in, and wondering after all those alots, everydays, I seens, and all the rest I was able to function enough to pick it up and throw a DN out there.

3   I went on Facebook, and my good friend and confidante Thuy Ann had this video called "What Teachers Make" posted on my Wall, or whatever that thing is.

4   It absolutely worked. After finishing up grading for my third class, I was exhausted, shaking, wondering to myself, "Why try?"

5   Because after reading around ten assignments from each of around 95 students, I saw that the work needed is monumental.

6   In addition to that, I hadn't really completely planned tomorrow's lesson, and this was at around 11:30 at night.

7   Didn't have time. I threw up my hands and declared, as often I do, "Best I should try ridding the shores of sand!" I do have a copyright on that one, btw.

8   The irony is that the more work we do as teachers, the more our lessons suffer, because we spend SO much time correcting papers and trying to give encouraging comments on a lot of rubbish.

9   I had finished grading my third class, that is to say, the entire gamut of work for the first six weeks of school. I still have two more classes to complete by Tuesday. It's lonely, tedious, and frustrating work, but what work isn't?

10   Anyway, I went on Facebook, only to find that Thuy Ann had posted this awesome video from You Tube.

11  She has been working, writing, traveling, and teaching at UCSD for a coupla years now, and has also had the pleasure of grading papers. I recall her posting one time that she was in the midst of grading some papers, and I commented, "My condolences..."

12  Anyway, the video absolutely picked me up right when I was ready to roll over and die.

13   I thought I'd throw it out there to the masses, even though it already is out there, but one thing that always irritates teachers is when people say, "What do you guys make?" It's usually a casual comment, meant to be harmless and cordial.

14  But it also brings with it the entire thing of us not making six figures, or whatever.

15   To teachers, it doesn't matter. It's like an athlete, or a singer, or an artist. We are born to do this thing, and it is our passion, beyond anything else. We'd probably do it for free if someone gave us a meal and a roof.

16   Here is the link the video she posted. It is a diatribe about this very issue, done by one Taylor Mali, a teacher, and a "slam" poet. It is entitled What Teachers Make:

    a Taylor 1

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxsOVK4syxU

17   The timing was exquisite, so I'd like publicly to thank Thuy Ann for this. When I saw it, my ears had turned red, my temples throbbed, and I shook from hours of commenting and placing grades on stacks and stacks of papers.

18  This just was the right thing at the right time.

19   I hope you enjoy it. Wear headphones; the guy gets pretty intense.

20   Meanwhile, thanks TA for once again throwing a smile my way.

21   Hopefully it will make others take note.

22   For the record, I appreciate the work that EVERYONE does. We all work hard at what we do, and probably all have similar moments where we wish someone would stand up and speak on our behalves.

23   Luckily I'm in a profession where every now and again, somebody steps up.

24   So yeah...we don't make that much. But what we do make can't be put into words.

25   This is perhaps as close as we'll get.

    26    Hope this was enjoyable.

27    And thanks once more kiddo, for sharing this. I intend to show it to my colleagues, and maybe even my students!

28    Very inspirational, and I salute you.

29    Thanks to everyone who supports the profession; it's tough times right now, so something like this really works.

30     Have a wonderful Tuesday everybody.

    31     Peace.

1   I decided to put a cartoon monkey hugging a banana out there because, well, it's fine time.

2  There's just too much bad stuff happening, and I think we need a Jack Johnson sorta smile today.

    3   Banana Pancakes.

4   This began yesterday morning when Caitlin showed me the proper way to peel a banana, based on a video of a monkey holding a banana upside down, then squeezing the top, which pops the peel, and then they peel down.

5   I thought it was amazingly simple and ingenius to study a monkey in order to learn the correct way to peel a banana.

6   The monkey perfected it, and it was just after Caitlin enlightened me that I made this startling observation:

"The simple banana is the world's most perfectly packaged food."

                                                                                           ---Bud Harrington

7  It isn't exactly Emerson, but really, the entire meal is simply THERE for you.

8   You gotta respect a monkey to teach us how to do things.

9   Now if we could just pop on a little Jack Johnson and assemble an infinite amount of these fellows...why it boggles the mind.

10  Caitlin is my daughter and genius extraordinaire!

11  I wish I had half her ingenius brain.

12  How I went through my entire life not knowing the proper way to peel a banana is beyond me.

13  And the solution, like most solutions, stares one right in the face:

    14  Ask a monkey.

15  Moving on:  I know that there are literally thousands of artistic teevee shows gracing our collective unconsciousness, but has anybody out there checked out Cougar Town, starring the inimitable Courtney Cox?

16  Absolutely hilarious! I've always been a huge fan of Friends, and ALWAYS thought that Cox, Aniston, and Kudrow were arguably the three funniest chicks in the history of teevee.

17  Friends to me was the Beatles of sitcoms.

18  And those three were the three most talented comedic actresses ever. Maybe it was their chemistry, but I think it was raw talent.

19  Don't get me wrong. We had Carol Burnett, Lucille Ball, and The Golden Girls, but really. And yes, Saturday Night Live had its share, but not in the sitcom category.

20  Well, I'm lovin' Cougar Town. Cox brings it, and brings it with her usual wacky gusto.

17  BOLD statement, considering all the Lucy Ball fans out there, but seriously.

18  Moving on, Part the Second: Well! I had a jump on this DN, then returned to grading papers. As always, I conked out midway through, and had my first major bout with insomnia last night when I awakened at 2 a.m.

19  It's always then that everything on the computer starts to go wonky.

20  Fortunately, I was able to fix things, like shrinking fonts, bold commands not working, that sort of thing.

21  Takes some patience and not being afraid of not getting back to sleep on a Sunday night/Monday morning.

22  I usually just relax for around an hour or two, knowing I already have a few hours behind me. Go online and goof around looking at cartoon monkeys, or some such nonsense.

23  What I should do is record a lecture I give.

    24  That'll put anyone away. ;  ) <---------sideways winky dude

25   Anyway, been pretty bizzy lately, so all apologies if you haven't heard from me. Grading papers is a grand thrill, let me tellya. Does wonders for one's social life.

26   Hope to get out a bit this week. I'm half-way done with all my grading, with the grading period deadline next Tuesday, so I may have some cloud time.

27   Meanwhile, you have a great Monday. Peel a banana and appreciate the organic art that occurs.

    28   It's Monday.

    29   Fly low.

    30   Peace.

     The Daily News

1   No news when you snooze lol!

2   I spent two nights in a row down at the school, so last night I got home and started to write this edition of the DN, when I got the snoooooooozies!

3   I must say, it corresponded to the last home game of my Giants. Emotional season, but one filled with a lot of hope.

4   I wanted like crazy to go to the game, but life, as it so often does. stepped in, preventing that idea.

5   So I listened to the final home game on this Walgreens radio, which was actually a great way to end the season.

6   If you are any sort of sports' fan, you know what I'm saying. You can't carry your teevee in to work, or to wherever life takes you, but you can always have some sort of contact with the game, in my place, a Walgreen's low-budget battery operated radio.

7   I originally bought the thing so I could bike around all summer and have it bungeed to my bicycle.

8   That stopped when school began so that I could catch the games up on the Chill during my prep.

    9   Ah, who cares anyway?

    10  Well, I guess I do.

11  Anyway, thanks Giants, for a grand season.

12  I must confess, when I listened to what I could, I got just the slightest bit sentimental.

    13  Did I cry?

14  There's no crying in baseball.

    15   Except yesterday, haha.

    16   Not ME, of course.

    17   I'm too manly.

18   But truly, this was one of the greatest seasons ever. The team wasn't supposed to go anywhere, but through determination, hard work, and belief, they nearly made the playoffs.

19  So much was so awesome I won't list them here, but one thing got me to choke back a tear: this was my Mom's last Giants' season, and she LOVED the team, and focused on every single pitch to her final days. She also loved the Brian Wilson commercials, in which those two little girls hammered on Wilson to get better.

20  That was back in April and May, and yesterday's final home game brought it all back.

    21  So yeah.

22   I won't often bring my own sports' faves into the mix, but yesterday became a pretty special day, a radio day, which in many ways made it all so real. I listened to Mike Krukow, Duane Kuiper, Jon Miller, and the newest addition, Dave Fleming (hope I spelled Dave's last name right; I've seen spelled "Flemming" but I assume that someone is off kilter, a good assumption).

23  I loved the tribute the fans gave to Richie Aurelia.

24  And I loved that the slowest guy on the team, Bengie Molina, stretched a single into a double.

25  I even stopped and respected Randy Winn for his amazing fielding in right field, and even nodded when Randy Johnson came in to pitch in the end.

26  But the toughest thing was not giving my team a standing ovation for all their spirit and heart yesterday. I was stuck in a classroom, almost ditched school, and now, honestly, wish that I had, because whatever the heck I spent time doing yesterday didn't hold up to going out to the Yard.

    27  <sigh>.

28  This is the first season since I was seventeen that I never got to a game. So while it was tough, it also symbolized moving on, in some strange sorta way.

29  Anyway, in April came the rains, and my team beginning Spring training, and yesterday a team I thought would just be fun to watch almost made it to the playoffs, all with my Mom's approval.

30   And I have to guess that she enjoyed the second half of the season with the best seats in the house, and the greatest Giants' fan ever, my grandfather.

31  There's lots more, but I can't even begin to define any of it.

32   Here's to the 2009 San Francisco Giants, who showed that raw talent, youth, and hope can make a team competitive.

33   Thanks for giving all of us faith. once again. We love you, and that's straight from the heart.

    34   See you all Monday.

    35   Peace.

    a HAIR revival
    The Daily News

1  You have days, you know, that simply rock.

2   That was today, or yesterday if you read this tomorrow.

    3   Mad Hatter.

4   I'm likin' it more and more.

5   That's twice this year, Jeff Love, that you've inspired me.

6   A teacher who can teach a teacher. Gotta love it.

7   Anyway, I'm still buzzing from today, or yesterday if you read this tomorrow.

8   We had Back to School Night, and for the first time since I first started teaching, I had a full house every single period. People hung off the rafters of The Cathedral, my affectionate nickname for my beautiful classroom.

9   Reminded me of opening night for Hair "back-in-the day". I distinctly remember someone coming in under the clock and saying, "Hey Mr. H...do we have any more tickets?"

10  That meant we had a sellout, which happened VERY few times, especially on a Thursday night.

11  I said, "Just take the money and stamp their hands. Get some folding chairs in the aisles, and keep sellin'!"

12  We had heard an very real rumor that the cast was going to be naked at the end of the first act, and did NOTHING to deny that rumor, as it IS in the script.

13  The song was "Where do I Go?", a beautiful song about wondering what you want to do with your life once you've reached nineteen or twenty.

14  Of course, we had no intention of having a naked cast, but what a rumor!

15   The entire town showed up that night, and I remember grabbing a follow spot, which as the show started, caved in on me, knocking my headphones crooked. I was so out of my game that I started yelling, "The spot is on me! Helllllp meeeee...my headphones are..." and I realized that we had WAY more people show up than any company ever dreamed could arrive.

16  I quickly regained focus, righted the spot, and the show blew everyone of us away.

17  Nobody got naked, thank goodness, but the Theatre that night rocked beyond all measure.

18   So the analogy to tonight, or last night, or whatever is solid. I had WAY more parents show up than I ever have, and something was happening at the Chill.

19  I was off my game at first, but rebounded and realized that this was one of my greatest teaching moments.

20  I've worked my ass off all year, and suddenly, there are people here.

21  Oh, yeah, I gave some token extra credit points if parents came but in my entire history of teaching, I NEVER had this many.

22   I couldn't write it off simply to "great students<great parents" although that was clearly part of it.

    23   It was more.

24   And when I got home, I buzzed like I haven't in years.

25   Somethin's happenin' at the Chill.

26   And I'm right in the thick of it.

27   Wish me luck, but it's a whole lotta good.

28   I'm still buzzing from the whole thing.

29   I think it was amazing, and I still haven't figured it all out.

30   But I loved it, and I'm gonna ride it and love all of it, for what it's worth.

    31   Life's AMAZING right now!!!!

    32   Aight then, peace yo!

33   Can't wait for tomorrow, or today if it's already tomorrow!

34    Luv y'all and as I said yesterday, or the day before yesterday, I miss y'all.

    35    <sigh>!

    36    Live life, love life.

    37    Peace.
