So...Natasha Richardson walks into a bar...

  Ah, pretty sad.

  Can you imagine?

How many of us have gotten a knock on the noggin and felt woozy?

I slipped and fell and knocked my head on a rock while hiking a coupla years ago. I was just hiking on this easy trail in Tahoe and stepped on a rock that had moisture under it. It gave way and I fell backwards. My head bounced on a flat piece of granite.

Sure gives you pause. Hey, some guy jumped in my lane only yesterday, right in front of me. We've all had those freaky little things that usually are met with a little, "Whew!". And sometimes they really make us thankful to be alive.

Moving on:  My Mom got moved out of intensive care yesterday and rested comfortably in a regular room. I got a chance to go in and talk, and she was pretty normal, laughing and joking once more. Thanks to all of you who sent your thoughts; you have no idea how nice those were. My entire family thanks you.

Moving on, Part the Second:  Yes, that was the Chill-on-the Hill you read about if you read or heard about the story of the envelope with powder in it being sent to a San Jose high school. I sneaked off to lunch the other day only to see about forty fire engines, ambulances, and squad cars parked in front of the school.

I thought they were kind of overreacting about me leaving campus at lunch.

Turns out it was an envelope containing talcum powder.

Still, one more thing out there to give pause.

Also, I received no pink slip, so technically my job is safe.

Moving on, Part the Third: So this week a lot of things switched and turned, but on this end, it's been a pretty okay week. Any time someone close makes it outta ICU, it's a good week.

Does anybody out there have a cure for insomnia?

Last night I awoke at around 2 a.m. and couldn't get back to sleep. Besides all the normal stresses of life, I also have begun noticing things. At 2 a.m. you notice dumb things, like how many things have lcd lights. I then noticed that two different computers were blinking on and off, giving a strange lcd heartbeat to the room.

Those are things you goog on in the middle of the night. I started thinking again that the computers might be getting so smart that they could one day stop being pushed around by us humans.

That concept hit me a few weeks ago when I watched Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. Actually I had watched that piece called Shift Happens on You Tube. It included a piece about how much smarter computers are going to be by 2013, and how they will be much, much smarter and faster than the human mind.

  Science truth meets science fiction.

I don't even consider those things during the day, or even in the early evening. It's just that sometimes I drift off and then awaken in the middle of the night, when everything is odd. I wrote a poem about that a long time ago, and it's somewhere.

It was just about how odd and strange the world of the middle-of-the night is.

  And it is.

I conked out last night at around 8 or 8:30 and awakened at 10:30. I always figure it's two hours in the nighttime bank, but still, sometimes that spells a 3 a.m. awakening, where things nowadays go blink in the night. I always feel I'm just another thing lit up like all the lcd lights. My eyes just join in the mix, like a cartoon.

  Weird, always so weird.

Anyway, it's really a morning in Almost Spring, and the world is warm and the birds are singing.

It's gonna be a gorgeous day, so appreciate life and all it has, despite all. There's a whole bunch of good things.

Take a moment and give pause. Look at a rose, or listen to a kid giggle. On St. Patty's Day I saw my neighbor outside in the late afternoon. He held the hose in one hand and a mug of beer in his other. It was everything life oughta be.

So light up the world today, make it your day, and tell all the rest of the bahstids to leave you alone.

  March on.

  Peace.
