Have you ever looked up at a building on the way home from somewhere, say 11:oo at night and see lights on in the windows?
It could be even later, say 3 a.m. and you're driving on 101, somewhere near Redwood City or something, and lights are on inside a building?
Have you ever checked the parking lot to see if there are cars?
A lotta times there ARE.
Like, I totally understand why custodians might be cleaning a building that late or that early or whatever you call it, but I honestly think that some people are just, plain working.
I sometimes look up and into one or two of the windows to see if I can see anybody.
Occasionally I do, and when I do, I wonder if they are there because they are working some sort of strange night shift, or if they're just hopelessly behind in their normal work.
Like is someone SO nervous about their job that they stay until 2 or 3 a.m.?
Sometimes I look up at the clock and I will already have worked a twelve-hour day, and I'll try to figure out why I'm the only guy left still working.
As I keep working, I keep telling myself that I should just go home, that everything can wait 'til tomorrow. Nothing is that important. Nothing.
And then I just fear that I'll fall hopelessly behind.
And I don't just see it with myself and my own job, that's what's weird.
I've seen people leaving work at 10, 11, and even midnight.
The weird thing is that I'm still working too, and I STILL can't seem to stay completely on top of things.
It does give one an advantage over everyone else, you know. So parts of it are either aggression: I want to be BETTER than everyone else walking around, so I'll train!
And the other part of me just feels it's because deep inside, we hard workers are in actuality insecure in our daily lives. We secretly feel we have to keep going or we'll fail.
But we get a huge rush when we kick ass at something as well.
But...
Yesterday I logged in sixteen hours of work. As soon as I was done I wrote this, quite close to 1 a.m. I never stopped working from the time I got up until I began the DN.
I went out a while ago to run some copies. It was pretty late, and I was annoyed because I was putting some packets together for Camp Everytown (YES!) and I drove over to the copy place.
On the way I saw this building; this is at around 10 p.m.
Half the lights in the building were on. People were in there working, moving around, robotic slaves to modern times.
It was just weird, and weird to think about.
Have you ever just looked up and wondered how we ever evolved to this?
A part of me wants to push some hard tunes on in the TOOOOOONDRA and speed through the hills this very night.
Roll the windows down all the way and crank out Hanson's Penny and Me in a gigantic whoosh through the hills of Sannozay.
I just might.
Life's too weird not to.
I'm gonna don a helmet and do that.
7-11 has wretched coffee and munchies, but that and a little chocolate oughta light me up like the night sky, which I could admire tonight.
Okay, well have an awesome Thursday.
I got very few pics today, but I might import some by the weekend, so check the Xanga Saturday or Sunday. Heck, half the fun of the DN is finding all those beautiful pix for y'all.
Meanwhile, I have a date with Penny.
Peace.
