Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay
So...Sir Edmund Hillary ascends into a bar...
With the staunch assistance of climbing partner Tenzing Norgay, Hillary became the first man to set foot on the top of Mt. Everest in 1953.
At the time, Everest was considered the tallest mountain on the planet at over 29,000 feet, although I recall once reading in a Believe-it-or-Not sort of piece that Everest actually IS 29,000 feet, and they add or subtract amounts so people will not think it's just an estimate.
I'm not really sure, nor am I at all sure as to who researches these things, or how, really.
Is it Everest or K-2 that is the tallest? I just don't have the time to research that just now.
Ah, who cares anyway?
Now here's an interesting piece of trivia for all you Beatles fans out there, and many DN readers are. Did you know that Abbey Road was originally going to be called Everest?
It rings with what they used to yell at one another on their meteoric rise to fame. Paul used to say to John, "Where we goin', Johnny? Where we goin'?" to which Lennon would reply, "To the Toppermost of the Poppermost!"
At one point they wanted to pose in front of the real Everest, but the tenor of the times was such that they decided to scrap the idea and just do the now-famous cover of Abbey Road, which has them walking across the crosswalk in front of the studio in which they had made all their music.
Moving on, sort of: In researching for this piece, I ran across this peculiar item:
These sorts of things happen on nights when I just keep trying to get things done, and then I'm interested.
For one thing, it's just fun to imagine what the cover might have looked like. I prefer this one, which would have dovetailed beautifully with the interest in the artwork of Maxfield Parrish.
I once had a poster called Ecstasy which I think I bought in an old Tower Records and Tapes store in Chico, California. It was one of those things that was attainable on a dime in times when nobody had money, or at least nobody I knew.
In fact, it looks like the guys who made that strange Beatles album took the artwork of Maxfield Parrish and copied the unique style.
Ah, who knows?
Moving on, Part 2: The last part of today's DN is dedicated to one of the most beautiful people on the planet, my daughter Caitlin. She recently graduated Magna Cum Laude from San Jose State University and will be moving to Sacramento this Sunday.
She had moved out while attending SJSU, and moved back to save some money and now she is venturing off on her own. Sunday she moves up to the North country of California, something she just knows she has to do, and it's been a very sweet week laughing, reminiscing, and enjoying as much of her company as we can.
And of course it's way more than all of that. This is my tiny dancer, and the absolute apple of my eye, and I'm going to miss her very much. She's a straight up kick in the pants, always laughing and smiling, smart beyond reason, and has the singularly best voice you'll ever hear. She's a meadowlark with an amazing voice, a songbird who needs to entertain heaven each Sunday.
And I love her.
Good luck K.T. Yo daddeh is gonna miss you.
I love you sweetie.
Peace.
yo daddeh
