Every day in every way it's getting better
and better...
--John Lennon, Beautiful Boy
I'm just beginning to see some of that.2 That rollercoaster ride continues, each and every day, but ultimately, it does get better. Or maybe I'm just one of those idiots who sees the glass half full all the time.
I guess it's because I see everything in life as a bit of a lesson.
I'm not really sure at which point in life we begin to see that sort of thing, but I just notice that I have a different outlook about everything these days. The lessons being taught are pretty amusing, really.
I see some of the behaviors that annoy me now are the very same behaviors that I used to do routinely at a younger age. You know, as you get a bit older, you think everyone else is reaching the same conclusions as you, and that they've all experienced the same changes and all.
But it simply isn't the case.
I think the first time I saw this was this time around a million years ago when my car engine started on fire. There was smoke pouring out of the engine area, and when I pulled over, the whole thing was on fire.
I completely lost it. I was on the side of 280, by the Crystal Springs reservoir headed South when I first noticed the smoke. I pulled over immediately, but when I saw the flames, I acted like a madman, signaling the traffic to circle WAY away from my car.
To them, I must have looked like a semaphor clown, jumping around and making big gestures that made utterly no sense.
My feeling was that I wanted them to move three lanes over before thing would blow. I fully expected an explosion and a mushroom cloud. I didn't want to come back down with wings and a harp.
"GO! MOVE AROUND! MY GOD, CAN'T YOU SEE??? WE'RE ALL GONNA BLOW!!!!" I kept jumping up and down like a red-headed stepchild.
Finally, this car pulled right up behind me, and this old fellow got out. I ran up to him and shouted, "DON'T PARK HERE!!!! MY CAR IS GOING TO EXPLOOODDDDE!!!! RUN, AND FOR GAWDSAKES DON"T LOOK BACK!!!"
He didn't say a word. He nonchalanty moved to the rear of his car, opened the trunk, and took out a gallon of water. He then walked over to my car and poured the water on the fire. It went out. He walked back to the rear of his car, put the water in his trunk, closed the trunk, got to the door on the driver's side, tilted his hat, and drove off.
I remember standing there staring, and then looking back at my cooling engine, and then smiling.
Someone had taught me a nice lesson in life. That was the only way I could see it.
Anyway, every day, in every way I'm realizing that we get those sorts of lessons each and every day.17 Last night just before I wrote all this, I had a sudden burning in my eyes. I scratched, rubbed, and then looked at the TV. It had Vincent Van Gogh on it. He too had scratchy eyes and put some Visene in them. He then winked at all of us, and his image moved into a frame, and the backgound became Starry Night.
I smiled.
Every day, in every way it's getting better and better.
Listen to your dreams. The TV just said that in a commercial.
So yeah, listen.
That's the end of today's lesson.
Peace.
