Looks like the Drama Workshop is back!

1  All hail the Drama Workshop, and a successful opening weekend for the first all student-directed show, Behind Closed Doors.  Opening night was hectic, nerve-wracking, but successful, and the cast and crew did it almost alone; that is to say with very little staff support. I had two events that evening and had to miss it, but word on the street is that it worked, and worked well.

2  Saturday night I was able to get to the Show. At first I was going to go down early and help get things set up and all, but I later decided to go as an audience member. I decided to go as a paying customer, a first for me.

3  I walked in the Theatre and was instantly greeted with a nice ticket set-up, pleasant box office people, and nice programs. Some wonderful swing music by Michael Buble played, and the stage had a beautiful pre-set, blue cyc, and I instantly felt I was at a professional event. There was the classic mellow jazz feel and warmth that only the Theatre can bring on a show night.

4  The Show began; the house went out and a bit too swiftly, and the music suddenly bumped to around a million decibels, an obvious accident, but it swiftly settled in to a Show that was well conceived, properly blocked, and above all, amazingly entertaining.

5  What made it magic to most of the wiser people in the audience was that it was ALL done by the students. There were a few minor moments of discomfort: a blackout that lasted well over two minutes, a tech guy caught running off stage, loud scene changes, etc. but otherwise it just moved in and out of moods, made us laugh, think, and enjoy a beautiful evening in the theatre.

6  In the end, the cast took a bow and the audience supported it with long and well-deserved applause.

7  What those guys did was no small feat, and they still have another weekend to really show their stuff. We all got to see a group that never gave up, and never gave in, who conquered all forms of obstacles to present a Show that was just plain enjoyable,

8  So a huge congratulations to the entire company. It was a tribute to all those who came before you to see that you are keeping the light, and all of us who have been a part of that Theatre's history salute your wonderful show.

9  For those out there who haven't gone, the Show runs this Thursday and Saturday nights at 8 p.m.

10  You should go out there and give these guys a look.

11  Most of us came away charmed beyond belief, and it was a very enjoyable evening. I look forward to this weekend.

12  Once again, it runs Thursday and Saturday nights at 8 p.m. The school's Winter Ball is Friday night, a reality that has been in place for a few years now.

13  That's about it for today. I feel the Drama Workshop deserves the entire DN for today; today is their day.

14  But come out by all means and watch this Show; it's one for the ages. If you just want to see the pure spirit of a group with lots of talent and heart, then by all means go and show your appreciation.

15  The Drama Workshop is still alive thanks to this marvelous group.

16  Thank you cast and crew of Behind Closed Doors.

17  I'll come again and watch, and I'm bringing a posse with me this time.

    18  Do well.

    19  Peace.

    1  Opening night.

2  Let me say it again: Opening night.

3  This is the first totally student-directed play in the history of YB.

4   It's been a lot of fun offering some help with lights and tech and all.

5  I was up last night until midnight trying to do the light thing.

6  I have been helping this last week, but only marginally. Those students are
on a roll. They did fine at the dress rehearsal, and even jumped into a large, circular group hug last night when things went pretty well at the dress rehearsal.

7  The ironic part of all of it is that I have a Winter Ball up at the Chil on the Hill, and I can't possibly get down to watch their performance.

8  I don't know when I've been a piece of three separate events in the same night. The Chill has a varsity girls' basketball game at 5, followed by a Winter Ball, and then YB's Drama Workshop is doing Behind Closed Doors, great title, by the way.

    9  Insanity.

    10  Ah, vell...

11  Just another day in the life.

12  You know what's fun about having an insane lifestyle? You wind up eating the strangest things. Like who knew that Nissan not only makes dandy cars, they also make a great shrimp ramen.

    13  Eating habits. Yeesh.

14  I eat anything that is in pieces these days: gummi bears, M & M's, Cheese Its, bon bons, the usual.

15  Anyway, I'm gonna keep it pretty short today and dedicate this edition of the Daily News to the wonderful students who have worked so hard against all odds to finally get this show to the stage. Thank all of you.

    16  Means a lot.

    17  Break-a-Leg.

18  And if you're within a mile of the place, you should just go.

19  Are you listening to the lessons that life is teaching you?

20  That was just asked on Oprah.

    21  I'm gonna leave.

22   You all give me strength.

    23   Heroes.

    24  Break-a-leg guys!

      Peace.
